Where Does Iron in Well Water Come From?
Iron dissolves into groundwater from surrounding rock and soil. Clear-water (ferrous) iron is invisible until it hits air and turns rusty; oxidized (ferric) iron shows up as orange staining, metallic taste and sediment. Iron also feeds iron bacteria, which leave slimy deposits and musty odours in toilets and tanks.
How Iron Filtration Works
Our iron systems use Katalox-Light catalytic filter media to oxidize dissolved iron and capture it on the media bed — with no chemicals, salt or chlorine. A water softener alone handles up to 2 ppm of clear-water iron — in some cases, only 1 ppm — which covers many wells; higher iron, manganese or sulphur calls for a dedicated iron filter sized to your water chemistry. We confirm the right approach with free professional water testing before recommending anything.
